Descripción

T orrey señala casi al final de su ensayo que este tuvo su germen en una disertación en la sede del Semitic Club de la Universidad de Yale el 13 de enero de 1904. Corría el año 1906, en otro mes de diciembre, cuando volvió a disertar sobre el mismo tema, en esta ocasión en Nueva York, en el seno de la Society of Biblical Literature. Añade el autor, además, que el texto publicado en 1912 contiene, en esencia, el escrito que en su momento redactó.
El ensayo no supone una visita ocasional del autor al tema, pues T orrey llevaba trabajando sobre los Evangelios muchos años, lo que le permitió hacer un planteamiento serio y contundente sobre los procesos de redacción y composición de los textos que incluyó en su The Translations Made from the Original Aramaic Gospels, publicado en Studies in the History of Religions Presented to Crawford Howell Toy, ed. D.G. Lyon, G.F. Moore (Nueva York: The Macmillan Company, 1912), que de facto es su tesis del origen arameo de los Evangelios, que culminará unos años después con otras dos obras más: The Four Gospels: A New Translation, en 1933 y Our Translated Gospels: Sorne of the Evidence, en 1936.
La tesis de T orrey es que los Evangelios Sinóp­ticos griegos, o traducidos del griego, fueron origi­nalmente compuestos en arameo, que los Evan­gelios griegos son traducciones de originales ara­meos y que los Sinópticos griegos fueron compues­tos en arameo antes del año 60. Hoy, la mayoría de estudiosos admiten que los escritos del Nuevo Testamento fueron originalmente compuestos en griego. Con todo, de lo que no hay duda es de que el medio semítico en general y el substrato arameo en particular constituyen el humus esencial con el que entender los textos neotestamentarios. Y nada de ello sería hoy posible sin la labor de pioneros como Torrey, cuyo espíritu controversista contri­buyó, y mucho, al desarrollo de estos estudios.
El traductor ha completado referencias biblio­gráficas y ha adaptado el ensayo al formato de libro, añadiendo información allí donde ha creído que era pertinente. Esperemos que esta versión española sirva de acicate a posibles filólogos expedicionarios en nuestros días. Ese es nuestro deseo, en memoria de un sabio como lo fue Charles Cutler T orrey.
